Dr. Balmaceda Lederer was born in Dolores, Abra, Philippines. Her father served in the U.S. / Philippine military during WWII, was chief of police in Dolores, Abra and an owner of a small grocery store. Her mother was a homemaker and helped in the family store.
From Dolores, Abra her family moved to San Esteban, Ilocos Sur when Lorene was 3 years old. Her father died when she was 6 years old, the summer before she started grade one, leaving her mother with 5 children to look after.
Her High school was San Esteban Academy where she graduated valedictorian.
In 1978 Lorene graduated from the University of Santo Tomas, with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. That same year she took and passed the government civil service examination. Immediately upon passing the examination a job was offered to her. She declined. Instead, Lorene enrolled in a dentistry program at the De Ocampo College in Metro Manila. This school was formerly known as the Philippine Dental College, and is the oldest school of dentistry in the Philippines.
Lorene graduated in 1982 and while waiting for the release of the Board Examination took a job as a dental assistant. Shortly after, Dr. Lederer was appointed the municipal dentist of Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur, a part of the Southern Ilocos Sur District Hospital. This occupied her from 1983 to 1987.
In 1987 Lorene made a major change in her life, going to Saudi Arabia as a dentist. She returned to the Philippines at the outbreak of the first Gulf War in 1990.
Dr. Balmaceda Lederer immigrated to Canada on March 1, 1991. Within 2 weeks she started her first job in her new country as a dental assistant. Then in 1992 she became a certified dental assistant.
In 1999, after 8 years of Canadian experience and participation in several continuing education courses, Lorene challenged the Canadian Board exams, becoming a licensed dentist in her new country, Canada.
